Working in the Military

Dreaming of becoming an engineer or going to law school? Chances are, you can pursue that dream either in or out of uniform. While some occupations within the Military are specific to the needs of the Services, most have equivalents in the civilian workplace.

Military Opportunities

A lot of people seem to think that joining the Military means signing up to go to war. The truth is, 80% of active-duty service members serve in roles that don’t involve direct combat. As you consider where you might fit within the Services, it’s good to keep in mind that you’ve got a lot of options. The Military offers hundreds of rewarding opportunities in a number of fields and all of them can give you real-world skills and help you make a difference.

Training and Advancement

You won’t find unclear organizational structures and vague criteria for promotions here. In the Military, you can expect a clear path to advancement and specialized training. The result? An environment that can help you achieve your career goals much faster than the civilian world.

Deployment and Relocation

Military life often involves moving around, but that can happen in a few different ways. When you’re sent outside of the continental United States for a specific mission, that’s called a deployment — for anything from peacekeeping to joint training exercises to helping with security at a U.S. embassy. Every mission requires special training ahead of time, and every branch handles deployment differently. Learn More

Another common reason for relocation is a short- or long-term assignment — a Temporary Duty (TDY) or Permanent Change of Station (PCS). A TDY will typically involve a stay between 30 days and six months, while a PCS is typically between two and four years. And, while relocation can be a challenge, no one makes the process more seamless than the Military – providing logistical, planning and financial support to get you where you need to go. Learn More
